Japanese punk-rock-garage quartet Otoboke Beaver have released new single PARDON? from their new album Super Champon which is set for release 6 May via Damnably.
Let’s be clear, Otoboke Beaver don’t do shoegaze and don’t do melancholy - ever. Their music is wild, frantic and acts like a shot of adrenalin straight to your very core. They are difficult to pigeon- hole and PARDON? is no exception. With no intro it just blasts off from the first nano-second. Sung in English the pace seems to increase as the track progresses, which to be honest just doesn’t seem possible!
The inspiration behind the single comes from a situation the band often finds themselves in; namely a continuous miscommunication of uncalled for points of view. The straightforward chorus is an extreme contrast to the stop-start time changes and dizzying pace. As the band further expands:
“Sometimes, the more you insist, the harder it is to understand you. We don’t have time to understand if you don’t have time to understand.”
With regards to new album Super Champon, the word ‘Champon’ is a Japanese noun meaning a mixture or jumble of things of different types. Otoboke Beaver explain:
“It’s a mixture of songs from love to food, life and JASRAC. Our music is genreless and has various elements. We hope that it will be our masterpiece of chaos music. It also sounds like champion.”
Otoboke Beaver, formed at Kyoto University’s music club and consist of Accorinrin (lead vocal & guitar), Yoyoyoshie (guitar & vocals), Hirochan (bass & vocals), and Kahokiss (drums & vocals).
They head out on an extensive tour from May 2022 and their confrontational performance skills, together with the band's incredible musicianship, make for a thrilling and unmissable live act.
