Track of the week - Halfcut by The Rivers
Halfcut is the latest single from The Rivers and is out on streaming platforms on October 1. The Rivers are a brilliant four piece from Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales comprising Daniel Hewitt on guitar/vocals, Nathan Coaker on drums, Evan Rowe on bass and Lloyd Evans on guitar. Their previous release was their debut EP (and my favourite EP of 2019) Life In General. This is their first recorded material since then.
Daniel relates "Halfcut is about always ending up in arguments with your partner and they are drunk during them all. How it never solves anything, or they don’t take any information in and you end the night on an argument, and get straight back into it the next night"
The track has a taut, brisk and catchy pop-rock feel to it with killer fuzz tone interludes. And like all their songs it has a down-to-earth, story-telling style reminiscent of The Small Faces or The Kinks. Dan takes up the story again "I feel all the songs are about real people, real stories. I think it makes them sound relatable and is the reason people seem to like them." We do for sure.

After seeing their gig in front of an actual audience at Mike the Pies and hearing 'Wasting Away' as part of the playlist before the Fontaines D.C. album launch shows, Julia Mason took the opportunity to have a chat with Turnstiles. As they took a break from rehearsals, she spoke to Callum, Cillian, Luke, Jake and Colm about playing live, how they got together as a band, the song-writing process and the upcoming gigs in October
Kevin McGrath is a Welsh music journalist and he has compiled a charity mixtape to support his local Velindre Cancer Centre. There are now 50 artists on it including five from Blowtorch Records. As Kevin says "The album sells itself, people simply need to hear it"
