London via Glasgow post punks Boxing Club deliver on the promise of debut single Barbra with their follow up City Boy
Track: City Boy
Artist: Boxing Club
Released: November 28 2025

In the week that saw us mourn the passing of Manc legend Mani, it is fitting that we review a great new track that opens with a bass line which wouldn't be out of place on a Stone Roses' track. Simultaneously swaggering and ominous, City Boy is only the second single from Boxing Club, after their excellent debut Barbra, yet the London (via Glasgow) four piece have an assured sound which surely bodes well for their upcoming EP.
The interlocking of the bass with the drums ... allows the guitar to weave in and out of the resulting spaces in a manner reminiscent of Magazine or Siouxsie and the Banshees.
The aforementioned bass writhes and pulses throughout this propulsive tale of a city boy out of his depth and searching for meaning in an incompatible world. The interlocking of the bass with the drums, which are at times restrained and then full throttle, allows the guitar to weave in and out of the resulting spaces in a manner reminiscent of Magazine or Siouxsie and the Banshees. The vocals give the track urgency and a slight sense of unease in the verses. The stop before the chorus is the perfect way to presage the euphoric release as the lyrics are double tracked for emphasis.
It's a thrill to be in at the start of a band's rise; only in round two, the Boxing Club sound already appears to be fully formed and sure of its place. We await what's next with pleasure.

City Boy was produced by Michael Smith (RYP Recordings). Boxing Club's debut EP What’s the State Done to You? is due for release in February 2026.
They perform Scottish dates in Glasgow and Edinburgh in January 2026, followed by a headline show at The Grace, London in February.
