Irish musician HitherFurther set out his stall with the excellent debut single Seagulls (Overwhelm The Sky) and now returns with second offering A Man Amongst the Ruins prior to a debut album slated for an early 2026 release.

Opening with a gentle guitar reminiscent of Nick Drake, A Man Amongst the Ruins fools you into thinking it's going to be a bucolic folk song. However the insistent strum and the metronomic drums in fact act more like a repetitive drone and conjure the feel of an acoustic shoegaze sound. The robotic sounding choral effect which comes in at the 1.15 mark is an excellent touch which adds a certain dissonance to what your ears may have been expecting.

You could imagine this climax being sung by a euphoric festival crowd which, for a track that opens like Nick Drake's Northern Sky, is some feat of songwriting.

The repetition of the couplet "I'm just living in an unknown emotion, a man amongst the ruins" adds to the hypnotic effect and again hints at Richard Ashcroft as we mentioned in our review of the debut single.

For a track which, on first listen, seems simple enough there is an awful lot going on. It strains at the slow tempo like a song wanting to be set free but HitherFurther resists until the final crescendo which, when unleashed, is all the more effective. You could imagine this climax being sung by a euphoric festival crowd which, for a track that opens like Northern Sky, is some feat of songwriting.

Like Seagulls (Overwhelm The Sky), A Man Amongst the Ruins was recorded at Black Bay Studios on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. The debut album Arachnoid Mist will be released in July 2026.
