Seagulls (Overwhelm The Sky) is the debut single from HitherFurther, the project of Dublin indie folk musician Marcus MaMahon with an album on the way in 2026.
Track: Seagulls (Overwhelm The Sky)
Artist: HitherFurther
Released: December 1 2025

HitherFurther is the solo project of Irish musician and film maker Marcus McMahon - the debut single is the wonderfully titled Seagulls (Overwhelm The Sky). And in a nice touch the single cover features an owl rather than a seagull.
Not all music is transactional. By that I mean songs don't have to have clearly defined, and heavily flagged, intros, verses, choruses and bridges which satisfy a particular listening experience. Seagulls (Overwhelm The Sky) clocks in at nearly five minutes and you'd be hard pushed to pin down any part of it and that is its beauty.
The electronic washes which build as the song progresses are subtle and sublime - it is these and the unaffected vocals (reminsicent of Richard Ashcroft) which make this track shimmer.
It drifts in with acoustic guitar which drives the whole track yet it doesn't shout 'singer/songwriter'. The track is all about atmosphere and texture. Like the best minor key, melancholia it is ultimately uplifting, even euphoric. It invokes a feeling of a vinyl album playing with the volume turned down, before someone turns it up for a few minutes then down again; we are left wanting more and with a residual sense of calm and beauty. The electronic washes which build as the song progresses are subtle and sublime - it is these and the unaffected vocals (reminsicent of Richard Ashcroft) which make this track shimmer.
Continuing the ornithological theme, the closest artist to compare to HitherFurther would be Songs of Green Pheasant, the project of English folk musician Duncan Sumpner who also conjures a minimalist, drfiting aesthetic. Seagulls is a tremendously affecting debut which bodes well for next year's debut album.

Having spent the last few years in London making the sci-fi film A Helical, Marcus moved back to Dublin in 2022. And decided to get back into music after a 20 year hiatus. Seagulls was written in 2003 but not recorded until 2025.
He is currently recording his debut album Arachnoid Mist at Black Bay Studios on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland (also where Seagulls was recorded) and it will be released in July 2026.
