The new Netflix drama House Of Guinness, about the famous brewing family after the death of Sir Benjamin Guinness, is soundtracked by an all Irish lineup of contemporary bands.

Publicity shot for Netflix series House of Guinness feat. music from Pebbledash

The House of Guinness is a Netflix series set at the turn of the 20th century in Dublin and New York. However it was mainly shot in Manchester not Dublin and is written by Steven Knight, the man behind Peaky Blinders and SAS: Rogue Heroes.

It's a stellar cast featuring Anthony Boyle, Louis Partridge, Fionn O’Shea, Emily Fairn, James Norton, Jack Gleason and Dervla Kirwan however for us the interest is in the accompanying music. The score by Ilan Eshkeri includes collaborations with Tim Wheeler (Ash) and WØLFFE but there are tracks from contemporary Irish bands placed throughout the eight episodes including Pebbledash with Carraig Aonair from their debut Blowtorch Records EP and old and new Galway favourites The Stunning and Shark School.

The music supervisor was Amelia Hartley and director Tom Shankland takes up the story: "I had one basic rule – everything had to be Irish! But of course, you don’t want to be too obvious, or if you’re going to use something famous, try to do it in a surprising way. I also love being introduced to new talent The music scene in Ireland has always been so dynamic. I did a deep dive with our brilliant music supervisor, Amelia Hartley, but also invited our cast to hit me with ideas. Amongst other great artists, Anthony sent me a few Lisa O’Neill tracks which I love. This was all part of giving the cast the space to take ownership of the tone of the show beyond just brilliantly playing their characters.

"A big shout out to Ilan Eshkeri and Steve McClaughlin (music mixer), who conjured up a fantastic score. We’d always talked about having something that felt like a raucous ceilidh, but also with space for dirty electric guitar and bass…. Steve did a deep dive into some very traditional Irish songs and worked them into the score with our modern twists. That hybrid is the show, and I think the score is fantastic. The needle drops and the score give so much to our tone.”
