Our weekly fix of the best new music as Julia Mason (aka The Decibel Decoder) brings us her new music review with singles from Basement Time Waster and Juan Laforet Blue Smoke/(The Knots)

Artist: Basement
Track: Time Waster

British alternative rock mainstays Basement return with the release of WIRED, their first new album in over eight years via their original label, Run For Cover Records. They also share the album’s focus track Time Waster, the album's opening song, and a fitting entry point into WIRED’s mix of urgency, melody and raw intensity.
Boldly defying genre limitations, the record marks a new chapter for the band and is their most authentic and fully realised work to date. Working with producer John Congleton (Death Cab for Cutie, Wallows, Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten), WIRED is the sound of five friends who have weathered every high and low without a single lineup change, creating the uncompromising music that first moved them.
Basement embark on a European tour followed by a headline set at Manchester's Outbreak Festival in June and an appearance at London’s All Points East Festival in August. All shows are listed below with North American dates to be announced soon.

Artist: Juan Laforet
Track: Blue Smoke/(The Knots)

Juan Laforet, a Glasgow-based psychedelic-rock solo artist, multi-instrumentalist and producer has released a new single Blue Smoke/(The Knots).
Exploding from the get-go, with fuzzy guitars and room-filling drums, the track culminates in a psychedelic instrumental interlude, labeled "(the knots)", frantically increasing in intensity until it comes to an end, crashing into a sonic wall. The song is accompanied by the sequel to the I Don't Want To Die music video, released a few months ago, produced by Humble Film Productions, with support from Creative Scotland.
Juan shares the following on the new single: “This one came early during the writing period for this batch of songs, it’s my garage rock redemption, in the sense of being the kind of music I never tried making but always have enjoyed”.
A founding member of the now-defunct indie-rock band Quiche, and having recently departed from Glasgow-based The Joy Hotel, Laforet has been crafting a unique brand of psychedelic pop/rock, with notable influences including: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Queens of the Stone Age and Tropical Fuckstorm.
