If, like us, you are sick to the back teeth with the rise of AI generated swill; yet also wondering how to tell the difference between slop and a real bop, you could do a lot worse than listen to the latest single Word to the Wise from Lincoln (UK) alt rock/indie punk four piece Televised Mind.


It's vituperative rant which sounds like a cross between Sleaford Mods and The Ruts and we love it. At over 3 minutes it's also a good bit longer than most of their previous (also excellent) tracks - check out their Masks EP from earlier this year.


As the raucous backing clatters in and then we get vocalist (and songwriter) Ste Walker's opening couplet of "We used to knock on each others' doors/We didn't have to rely on mobile phones", the track screams human, analogue songwriting and playing. If the next line bemoaned the discontinuation of Shandy Bass and single purchase cigarettes we wouldn't have been surprised (it doesn't).


the colossal, pummelling sound of the drums and bass ... forcefully propel their tracks but also give the guitars leave to not play continuously; they can come and go, leave spaces, wind spidery post punk lines around the words.


The vocal delivery has a hint of Yard Act but without the arch knowingness - this is real life delivered straight up and also foregrounded in the mix. The not-so-secret sauce of Televised Mind is the colossal, pummelling sound of the drums and bass which not only forcefully propel their tracks but also give the guitars leave to not play continuously; they can come and go, leave spaces, wind spidery post punk lines around the words.


A word to the wise - keep an eye on this crowd.

Recorded at Farm Factory Studios, Word to the Wise was the first song Ste wrote in 2021. It was produced by Billy Lunn from The Subways. Ste says: "The track was born out of a relatable moment when a friend wouldn't stop talking to me after a long day of work, capturing the frustration and energy of the moment."
