As The Owl Sounds release their debut single Oscar feat. Meryl Streek, we ask the man behind the sounds Phil Wyer about the five seminal albums which are influences on his music

David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

Incredible songs, vocals and recording. Mick Ronson on guitars with some excellent playing. Starman is a perfect song. I love every era of Bowie but this album is my favourite.

Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

So many massive songs and some of the best guitar sounds ever. Op Amp Big Muff into a Marshall JCM 800 if anyone’s interested in recreating it!

The Prodigy - Music for The Jilted Generation

The best drum and squelch bass synth sounds, full of hooks and mad energy - Voodoo People and No Good (Start the Dance) for me are still as fresh and furious as they were in 1994. Liam Howlett is a genius.

my bloody valentine - loveless

Probably on everyone’s list, it’s just that good. Sounds so dense, dark, distant, and unsettling. Kevin Shields' playing is incredible, he’s a big influence. I’m tempted to get the Fender Shields Blender to get that When You Sleep sound down.

Radiohead - Kid A

National Anthem and Everything In Its Right Place - hypnotic and wonderful. The production is unbelievable every instrument sounds so present. The mix is the crispest around. I always hear something new when I put it on. Love it.
