Mayo/Wicklow noise rock foursome Nerves release second EP Iarmhaireacht on streaming with a vinyl release to come
EP: Iarmhaireacht
Band: Nerves
Released: August 15 2025

Following debut EP Glórach, the now four piece, Mayo/Wicklow, noise rock outfit Nerves are back with their second EP Iarmhaireacht (ear - ver- oct). Again produced by Dan Fox of Gilla Band and with its Irish name translating to ‘the eerie loneliness you feel at cock's crow’, Iarmhaireacht arrives to disabuse us of any notion that all is well in rural Ireland.
Across five coruscating tracks and three spoken word interludes, Nerves channel an existential feeling of the inherent loneliness and isolation caused by watching loved ones leave for greener pastures - geographical or human - and the substance-based self-destruction it can cause.
The tracks ... demonstrate Nerves' mastery of non-linear song structure, intra track dynamics and vast soundscapes, sometimes bleak and angsty, sometimes open, emotional and low key.
The interludes are not included merely for filler. They have been meticulously curated by the band, including bass alumni Charlie McCarthy, because as they say "that's why it’s so interesting to find a sample talking about emigration or lack of infrastructure in the 1950s because they way they talk about it, they may as well be narrating the same story in 2025."
The tracks reflect this too as they demonstrate Nerves' mastery of non-linear song structure, intra track dynamics and vast soundscapes, sometimes bleak and angsty, sometimes open, emotional and low key. The band's commitment to pushing at the boundaries of what 'popular' music can be is both commendable and exhilarating.
On the songs' subject matter front man Kyle Thornton reflects: "they all stem from issues and stories that are very personal to me and my life, however a lot of the things I speak about in the lyrics are shared with many young people in Ireland and are results of issues that face the country at large, so we try and frame them in a way that sheds some light on the problems the country faces. We mostly do this through our use of samples from old Irish media that will hopefully give a larger cultural context to the things I speak about in the lyrics. In a country with mass emigration, inflation, housing crises and corruption, of course substance abuse and mental health issues will follow that."
Iarmhaireacht is available now on all streaming platforms and will see a Blowtorch Records' vinyl release in early November.
