Galway's noisy truth tellers Slyrydes have released their debut album What Happens If You Get Happy? five years after it was recorded.
Album: What Happens If You Get Happy?
Band: Slyrydes
Released: July 28 2025
Trigger warning: this album tells the truth about modern Ireland.

De Valera's vision of Ireland was focused on traditional values, including the importance of family and the traditional role of women. He spoke about the "laughter of happy maidens" and "serene old age." It seems unlikely he could envisage an Ireland where a Galway band skewer political corruption thus:
'But your children are wealthy
On a nation's blood
Do you give a fuck
I am not sure that you could'
So goes Ahern.
Then they tackle the mental health crisis (Out Patience, Mental Health); the alarming suicide rate (Boy in the Debs Suit, Just for Show), influencer/empty fame culture (Famous to Five Million) and the rise of the far right (Dangerous Animals).
If it all gets a bit much for those of a delicate disposition, there's also a cracking slab of 00s indie sleaze with the unexpected Point of View.
If you are lucky enough to belong to a supportive community, be in good health and live in decent, affordable accommodation then this album may not be for you. There's always Kingfishr.
Ireland is home to a significant number of people to whom this unfortunately does not apply - this album is a vital corrective to the narrative that all is well in "the Ireland that we dreamed of."
Given that it's take five years for this album to be released, it may be considered ironic that there's also a track called Procrastination Is a Fear of Failure. The truth, as ever, is deeper and darker with the band facing both external challenges and their own demons in this time. As guitarist Mark Comer wryly notes: “It’s been a long road, but maybe we needed that time apart to figure out who we really are. This album is our story.”
Album of the year contender.
