Irish post punk band Petrel release second single Shame

We loved the debut single Existing Condition from new Irish four piece Petrel and now they are back with follow-up single, Shame.

Existing Condition staked out a claim for an authentic Petrel-sized space in a very overcrowded 'post punk' space - and that's just in Ireland never mind the UK and further afield. Shame builds on this and although the opening fractured guitar lines, frantic bass and tumbling drums bring Fontaines DC's A Hero's Death to mind, the track develops unexpectedly as Gerry Sheil’s melodic and non strident vocal delivery brings intimacy and warmth to the brutalist slab of the music. A graceful petrel gliding over a turbulent ocean. It's no exaggeration to say that the euphoric ending morphs the track from Interpol adjacent to something which would sit easily on Radiohead's The Bends.

Recorded in Dublin with producer Darragh Winters, the track brilliantly captures the restless energy and interplay between the 'four frontmen in one room'. “This band was never about imitation,” says guitarist Eoin Reilly. “Every song has to feel real, otherwise it’s not worth doing. With Shame, we wanted to show another side of what we can do, creatively, we have to keep moving.

“Shame is a rumination on authenticity, a hole we’ve often found ourselves in everyday life and in our artistic work. There is a constant battle to avoid influence or stagnation in political beliefs, relationships and in music. The work that needs to be done to express ourselves freely, and without fear of failure, I think is something we can all struggle with. Shame, lyrically, dives into this internal argument in an effort to come out the other side knowing more about how we see the world and our own creative process”
