Pebbledash release first single 'Tiles & Moss' from upcoming EP

Tiles & Moss from Pebbledash is the Cork-based band's first single release from their upcoming EP To Cast the Sea in Concrete out on November 5.

Following the release of Pebbledash's debut EP Four Portraits Of The Same Ugly House on January 31, which received rave reviews and quickly sold out its vinyl release, the Cork fast risers are back with a new single Tiles & Moss. It's the first to be taken from their second EP To Cast the Sea in Concrete which is released on November 5.

The opening guitar invokes a 70s glam rock stomp as much as the fuzz heavy, warped drone of classic shoegaze. The verse combination of Fionnbharr's delicate melody with Asha's backing vocal has a sweet pop, even doo wop sensibility; the moment they join together to harmonise the same lyrics is a soul soaring moment.

This an evolution rather than a revolution in their sound, however what is apparent is the confidence, even swagger which comes across in the all encompassing experience of Tiles & Moss.

Tiles & Moss has long been a staple of the Pebbledash live experience and so committing it to tape was an important step in their musical evolution. As Cormac Donovan O’Neill explains: “It was vital to us that when we brought Tiles & Moss to the studio, we would do it justice. As a song, we’ve always felt it’s quintessential Pebbledash, exploring so many sides of what makes up our musical DNA – the lurching, serrated texture of the guitars combined with Fionnbharr’s rapid-fire lyrical delivery recalling an Isn’t Anything-era my bloody valentine, Schuch’s pared-back drumbeat reminiscent of Sister or Daydream Nation."

Tiles & Moss was recorded by Cathal MacGabhann (Altered Hours), mixed by Andy Killian (Pretty Happy) and mastered by Pete Maher.

O'Neill expands further on the recording experience: "Spending four days in the studio living with these tracks encouraged us to really dig into the potential of these arrangements’ textural elements.

Underpinning Tiles & Moss you can hear the low hum and wheeze of a charity shop-find harmonium breathing throughout, that acoustic voice meshing in with the synthesiser, as much evoking Neu and Cluster as it does the sonorous pipes of Paddy Keenan and Liam O’Flynn.”
