Irish electronic music project The Swedish Railway Orchestra returns with the second single Do U Wanna leave? from its sixth and final studio album, Repetition Without Permission which will be out October 1.
This track sees The Swedish Railway Orchestra step away from the club-focused energy of earlier material in favour of something more shadowy, spacious and cinematic. There is also a b side which is an acid remix of one of the album tracks - (untitled).
Drawing on the brooding trip-hop atmosphere of Massive Attack and the elegant, dreamlike textures associated with Air, the song moves at its own unhurried pace. A steady electronic heartbeat sits beneath washed-out synthesisers and a close, understated vocal, creating a sense of nocturnal tension that feels both seductive and unsettled.
Over to project sole member Rob Smith: "The accompanying music video carries that mood into an intimate hotel room setting filled with quiet moments of solitude and a sense of anxiety. That lack of resolution allows the title itself to become the central question, open to interpretations of love, escape, reinvention and departure. The listener or the viewer can take from the song what they feel.
"I know I can make a song a song that makes people dance, but this is completely different. This might make them feel a slight sense of unease, and I like that”
Blending shimmering electronica, melancholic trip-hop, psychedelic textures and hypnotic, danceable rhythms, the new album sees Dublin musician Rob Smith bring the project to a close with its most immersive and accomplished collection yet. Rich in atmosphere and melody, Repetition Without Permission expands on the experimental sound that has defined The Swedish Railway Orchestra over the past decade while offering a fitting final chapter.
The vinyl version of the album is available to pre order and comes in a hand numbered edition of 100 on a beautiful blue/yellow egg yolk effect record with an artwork booklet with lyrics, all housed in a special transparent rice paper cover with stickers. Truly a fitting artefact for the last release from the Orchestra.
