New music updates from SXSW #1

Updated: Mar 16, 2023

Get the vibes from sweaty mosh pits in Austin, Texas without leaving your living room. Today You Said Strange and Sunflower Bean

SXSW in Austin, Texas celebrates the convergence of tech, film, music, education, and culture.

They say it's "an essential destination for global professionals, the annual March event features sessions, music and comedy showcases, film screenings, exhibitions, professional development, and a variety of networking opportunities."

We say it's mighty craic where you can watch great bands all day while drinking beer. Our very own Julia Mason has press accreditation and is sending updates on what's going down so you can do the same at home! All videos & photos courtesy Julia.

First up You Said Strange. A new band to us (which kinda is the point of SXSW), they hail from Normandy in France and describe their sound as "pop noise, neo psychedelic, very smooth grunge inspired by shoegaze and a bit of the post punk wave".

You can find all their details in this meet the band interview.

We have no idea what this track is called but it's a beautiful slab of psych.

Next Sunflower Bean. Again new to us, they are a trio from New York comprising vocalist and bassist Julia Cumming, guitarist and vocalist Nick Kivlen and drummer Olive Faber. Julia lays out their manifesto: “Why not make what you want to make on your own terms? Why not make a record that makes you want to dance? Why not make a record that makes you want to scream?”
